Email gord@12player.app. Please say which device is running the game (Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Vision Pro) and what you were joining with.
12 Player is in development and is not on the App Store yet. This page describes the current build.
Joining
One device runs 12 Player and shows it on the screen. There are twelve seats, shown as a row of chips along the bottom of the lobby. Each player needs one thing to play with:
- Siri Remote
- Click to join. Slide your thumb on the clickpad to steer; any click is GO. Each remote is its own player.
- Game controller
- Press A (Cross on a PlayStation controller) or the right trigger to join. Steer with the left stick or the D-pad; A or the right trigger is GO.
- Keyboard, left half
- Steer with A and D. GO is W, Space, X, C or V.
- Keyboard, right half
- Steer with ← and →. GO is ↑, Return, P, , . or /. Two people can share one keyboard, one on each half.
- Touch screen
- On iPhone and iPad, the left half of the screen is a stick: touch it left or right of its middle to steer. Tap or hold the right half for GO. Any touch joins.
- Mac trackpad
- Click in the lobby to join. Finger position steers and a click is GO. It plays the same seat as a lone keyboard player; with two keyboard players, a click gives the trackpad a seat of its own. During a round the pointer is hidden so the trackpad can steer: press Esc to get it back.
- A phone
- Scan the QR code at the top right of the lobby with the phone's camera. A controller opens in the browser: a ring to steer and a GO pad in your colour. Nothing to install. The phone has to be on the same WiFi as the game. The phone takes a seat as soon as the page opens.
Starting a round
Press GO once to take a seat (a phone already has one), then hold GO. Your chip fills in a little over a second. The round starts when everyone who is holding is full, and those players are in. Anyone with a seat who wasn't holding sits that round out. If fewer than eight people start, bots fill the field to eight.
A round lasts about 75 seconds, or less if somebody wins early. The standings show for a few seconds and then the lobby comes back on the same game.
Choosing a game
The lobby plays the selected game by itself behind the game's number and name. Flick left or right on anything to change it: a stick or D-pad, the steering keys, a swipe on the Siri Remote, the touch screen, or a phone's ring. Tab, the Y button on a controller and Play/Pause on the Siri Remote also step to the next game, and the number keys on a keyboard jump straight to a game by its number. Left alone, the lobby moves on to the next game every 25 seconds.
Leaving a round early
Hold Esc on a keyboard, Menu on a controller, or Back or Play/Pause on the Siri Remote for two seconds to go back to the lobby. In the lobby on Apple TV, the remote's Back button leaves the app as usual.
If a phone can't connect
- Same network. The phone has to be on the same WiFi network as the device running the game (that device can be on WiFi or wired to the same network). Check the phone hasn't dropped to mobile data, and turn off any VPN on it.
- Local Network permission. The device running the game may ask whether 12 Player can find devices on your local network. If you chose Don't Allow, phones can't reach it: turn Local Network on for 12 Player in that device's Privacy & Security settings.
- Guest networks. Many guest WiFi networks, and some hotel and office networks, stop devices from talking to each other. Use your main network.
- No QR code in the lobby. The QR code only appears when the device running the game has a WiFi or wired network address. Connect it to your network.
- The game was restarted. The QR code changes every time 12 Player starts. Scan it again; an old page won't reconnect.
- A steady grey pad. The phone is connected but every seat is taken. It gets a seat as soon as one frees up.
- A dim, pulsing page. The phone is not connected to the game: it has not reached it yet, has lost it, or the room is full of phones. It keeps trying by itself. If you had a seat and reload the page in the same tab, you get your seat back.
The controller page's address starts with http:// and a string of
numbers. That is the game's address on your own network, not a website, so a
browser may label it “not secure”. Privacy
explains what the page sends.
Requirements
These will be confirmed when 12 Player is released. The current build is made for Apple TV (tvOS 17 or later), iPhone and iPad (iOS and iPadOS 17 or later, in landscape), Mac (macOS 14 Sonoma or later) and Apple Vision Pro. It needs no internet connection. So far the current build has been run on Mac and in the Apple TV simulator; the iPhone, iPad and Apple Vision Pro versions are built from the same code and are still to be tested.
